The European Energy Certificate System (EECS) was developed in 2004 and is administered by the Association of Issuing Bodies. EECS provides a common standard for the management and exchange of energy certificates, including Guarantees of Origin and RECS certificates. The system will shortly be extended to address the needs of other types of certificate. European Commission Directive 2001/77/EC required Member States to identify the source of renewable energy by means of Guarantees of Origin. These provide documentary proof of renewable energy generation. EECS facilitates efficient and effective international exchange of Guarantees of Origin. The Renewable Energy Certification Scheme (RECS) was developed from a concept first proposed in 1998. The scheme provides a process for separating the environmental benefits of renewable energy from the energy itself. The resulting benefits can be used as evidence to enable trade, both within individual countries and internationally. The key to these processes is the reliance upon centralised computer based registries operated by each country. This website uses the LogActiv activity accounting registry. This has been developed by Campbell Carr to provide secure storage of energy production data. The software supports both EECS and RECS, and provides a unified approach to the management of energy certificates. The web interface has a pleasing and well-constructed set of screens and menus, which give account holders quick access to the essential aspects of managing a portfolio of energy certificates. |
